Case Study: Mace Landscapes

Introduction

This case study explores how CoLab Planning successfully assisted Mace Landscapes in relocating their horticultural and bark-processing facilities. Learn how we tackled complex environmental and logistical challenges to secure resource consents.

Project Overview

In mid-2022, Andrew Miller from CoLab Planning partnered with Mace Landscapes to gain resource consents from Auckland Council. The goal was to relocate their existing facilities in Drury and Papakura to a new, larger site in Ardmore. Mace Landscapes is a major supplier for plants and trees, serving the Auckland region for nearly 50 years.

Challenges

The chosen site posed several constraints:

  • Proximity to a neighbour's dwelling

  • Floodplains

  • Proximity to a channelised watercourse

The project's major risks were related to the three-waters management, noise, and traffic. The most challenging aspect was managing water runoff due to the outdoor nature of the bark-processing facility.

Solutions

CoLab engaged environmental scientists and civil engineers to find a balanced solution. A water-sensitive approach was adopted, including the construction of new swales, raingardens, and a constructed wetland to manage water runoff.

Outcome

Resource consents were granted by Auckland Council in early 2023, and Mace Landscapes has begun relocating. We enjoyed working with them and wish them well in their new Ardmore location.
